With the winter months fast approaching, you will see your breath in the air, snow will begin to fall, and hot cocoa will bring the ultimate comfort. However, driving during the upcoming season can be quite the treacherous task especially when the roads become covered in snow and ice.
Tip 1: Check to make sure your vehicle is fully prepared for winter driving
To get a better grip on the road, installing winter tires on all four wheels of your vehicle is almost a necessity. In addition to winter tires, keep a snow brush and a small shovel in your car in case you are stuck or snowed in. Double check that your car also has battery jumper cables, a flashlight, and a blanket in case of an emergency.
Tip 2: Drive smoothly
Driving slowly and without abrupt steering changes during poor conditions is paramount to safe travel. The faster your car is going, the less time you will have to react to dangers on the road such as other stalled or stuck cars. Make sure that you are not only keeping your speed down, but also making very smooth movements. Any sharp turns or sudden stops can cause your car to go into an uncontrollable slide.
Tip 3: Don’t “Pump” the Brakes - Let the technology work!
Most vehicles are equipped with an anti-lock braking system (ABS). If your vehicle has ABS, do not “pump” the brakes. Apply constant pressure and let the system work.
Tip 4: Brake before making turns
Before you enter any turn, it is crucial to brake slowly in a straight line. By doing this, you will avoid sliding due to the change in speed while turning. You may then gently accelerate once you have safely rounded the corner.
Tip 5: Get in a rut!
When the road surface is snowy, the least slippery and most predictable part of its surface is usually the ruts, which have been heated by pressure from previous cars. They also provide "rail road tracks" that may help to keep your car from sliding sideways.
Tip 6: No Cruise Control
Never use cruise control in icy, wet, or snowy conditions. If cruise control is enabled and your car begins to hydroplane, your car will attempt to accelerate and you may lose control of your vehicle.
Tip 7: Watch for Black Ice
Make sure to slow down when approaching bridges, overpasses, or shaded areas as these sections of road freeze sooner than others in cold weather. These may be covered with “black ice,” a thin coating of ice which is almost invisible but very hazardous. It can cause your vehicle to suddenly lose traction , braking and cornering control.
Tip 8: Leave Yourself Plenty of Time
Make sure to give yourself extra time to reach your destination. If you have to rush, you may become stressed and have less focus on the road and conditions.
